Frequently asked questions
What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO is the practice of making web pages easy for AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews to find, read and cite. It builds on SEO but focuses on crawler access for AI bots, answer-first writing and machine-readable facts.
How is the GEO score calculated?
The GEO score is a weighted average of over 50 checks in 8 categories, from AI crawler access to structured data. Blocking an engine's search crawler caps that engine's score at 10. The full rules are on the methodology page.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt my AI visibility?
Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search. GPTBot collects training data; ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. We report training crawlers for information only and never deduct points for them.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is optional. As of October 2026 no major AI engine has confirmed using it, so it only earns bonus points and is never penalised.
